Search for Wisdom as you would Valuable Treasure

We are still setting the stage for great bits of wisdom.  We have looked at the value of wisdom.  However, now we want to point out that pursuing wisdom is worthwhile.  We will be looking at a valuable treasure that should be pursued as we would gold and silver.

Proverbs 2:1-4: “My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure

The Most Valuable Treasure

This is an interesting section of Proverbs when you consider our common goals.  Many of us strive to be able to retire into a life of leisure.  Our grand plan is focused on relaxing and pursuing nothing else.  However, as we will see, a pursuit of wisdom will do more to fulfill our life than retirement.

Note also that there is no end to our pursuit in this Proverb.  The admonition is to call out for insight and cry out for understanding.  The statement seems to make a pursuit of wisdom something akin to a desire to breathe.  Thus, it is a key to life, not just success.

Becoming Better Parents from This

So, how do we take this into account as a parent?  I think we should live a life of learning.  Avoid getting into a rut of activities.  This will not only help us, it will also benefit our children.  We may apply this by picking different vacation locations every year, watching a broad range of shows, or simply reading the newspaper every morning.  The benefit of pursuing wisdom will help us grow as human beings over time.  Thus, the parents our children start with will be less than the ones that send them into the world.

Teaching Children this Wisdom

Teach by example.  Thus, as we pursue wisdom in our adult life, our children will see that it is a valuable pursuit.  Talk about this as well.  Explain how actions are taken to pursue wisdom and the benefit we receive from it.  Point out the savings or valuables we gain from wisdom.  Therefore, our success through wisdom and foolish mistakes should all be pointed out.  This approach will instill a healthy respect for wisdom as our children grow and lead them to desire more in their lives.
