Avoid Those With Evil Intentions

Today we look at a good all-purpose Proverb about how to deal with those that have evil intentions.

Proverbs 1:10: “My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.”

More Than The Extremes

The following verses provide an example of thugs waiting to ambush an innocent.  The story includes a promise of valuables enough to fill a house.  However, there is that sticky little catch of having to ambush an innocent.  It goes on to recommend against these people that rush to spill blood.  This example is highly unlikely to be a situation your children experience.  Nevertheless, there are those we all know that are prone to violence and using force.  When you look at that aspect, then this becomes much more applicable to normal life.

Violence Begets Violence

I think that the general usage of this proverb is very familiar to us.  We regularly raise children to avoid bullies and avoid being one.  We also steer children often towards solving problems without resorting to violence.  However, we cannot say that brute force is never useful.  It just should not always be the first option.  This pearl may not be new to any of us.  Nevertheless, it is worth keeping in mind as we discuss situations in TV, movies, and real life.

You Are Known By Those You Associate With

Although a secondary nugget of wisdom, this proverb also implies that we are known by our friends.  More importantly, we will often share their fate.  This statement goes beyond the saying that those who live by the sword, die by the sword.  In this case, the suggestion is that those who live by the sword will also cause collateral damage among their associates.  This is important as children get older as being in the wrong place at the wrong time by accident can be just as devastating as when it is on purpose.
